Why Cleaning Makeup Applicators is Good Skincare

Dirty makeup applicators are like petri dishes

A Harris poll of 1,113 adult women in 2015 found that 39% of women who use makeup brushes clean them less than once a month or not at all.(1) Does it matter if you clean your makeup applicators?

3 Reasons to clean your makeup brushes and sponges regularly:

1. Using clean makeup brushes and blenders is one of my top skincare tips. If not cleaned, makeup applicators accumulate sebum, pollution, dust, product buildup, and dead skin cells, and bacteria that can contaminate makeup products and cause an imbalance in the skin’s microbiome. A study in 2019 reported in the Journal of Applied Microbiology found that 93% of used beauty blenders they tested had not been cleaned and were contaminated with significant levels of microbes (fungi, Citrobacter freundii, E. coli, Enterobacteriaceae, and Staphylococcus aureus). About 79-90% of all used makeup products were contaminated with bacteria. (2) Yuck!

2. Dirty applicators will also make it more difficult to achieve that flawless makeup look you’re seeking. Left-over products can affect the shape of the applicator and make it more difficult to apply pigment evenly and blend properly.

3. Taking care of your makeup tools will make them last longer. If you keep them clean and fresh, you can afford to invest in brushes that will last for years.

How to Use It

IMMEDIATELY AFTER APPLYING MAKEUP

Step 1 – Pump a few drops of the cleanser into your palm or a small dish. Add water if desired.

Step 2 – Swirl the brush or sponge in the cleaner.

Step 3 – Gently rub brushes or sponges on your palm until they are well coated with the cleaner.

Step 4 – Apply a few drops of water to the sponge or brush.

Step 5 – Gently swirl the applicator in your hand or on a soft cloth (paid link) to loosen and dissolve makeup. (Cloth not included with purchase.)

Step 6 – Rinse brushes and sponges under running water, with brush bristles facing down so water doesn’t get into the handle.

Step 7 – Gently squeeze out excess water.

Step 8 – Gently stroke brush bristles on a clean towel and lay flat to dry. Gently squeeze makeup sponge in a clean towel and allow to dry in a sponge holder (paid link).

A Word about Bristles

SYNTHETIC BRISTLES are better for applying liquid or cream foundations. They do not soak up foundation but hold it enough to smoothly disperse it.

NATURAL BRISTLES are great for applying powder like eyeshadow and blush. If you use a natural bristle brush to apply liquid or cream foundation, you may find that your brush is more difficult to clean because the bristles are absorbing the makeup. If you want to continue using a natural bristle brush for this purpose, first apply a drop or two of an oil cleanser like Corum Barrier Repair Oil Cleanser and allow it to soak into the bristles to loosen the makeup. Rinse, then use Corum Makeup Brush Cleaner Concentrate. Consider switching to a synthetic bristle brush for liquid or cream foundation.

SPONGES like BEAUTY BLENDERS are great for applying different types of foundation. They can be used damp to apply liquid and cream and dry to apply powders without creating dust clouds. Sponges should be washed immediately after each use.

If applying a powder foundation, use a sponge first to avoid breathing in the product, then use a natural or synthetic foundation brush to blend, if desired.
